This weekend we went on a 2-day hike in the Egmont National Park to admire the Mount Taranaki. The name Taranaki comes from 2 Māori words : ‘Tara’ which means ‘mountain peak’, and ‘naki’ which is thought to come from ngaki, meaning ‘shining’. And this name of shining Mountain peak really suits that place, especially when you have those amazing sun rays reflecting on the Majestic mount.
We did the Pouakai Circuit, which takes around 13 hours. It was really breathtaking – in every sense of the term ! Breathtaking because it’s a long hike (with heaps of stairs, steep cliffs and muddy paths through the forest) but also breathtaking because of its sceneries.
We began the hike on the Saturday morning in order to get to the top quite early and have a chance to get a bed in the hutt. Indeed, at the top of the Pouakai Circuit (after 7-ish hours walk) you have the Pouakai Hutt where you can spend the night, but you only have 16 beds so the first arrived is the first served ! Otherwise, you can sleep on the ground near the fireplace or on your own mattress if you bring one 😉

Near the hutt, you have the beautiful mirror lake where you can admire the Mt Taranaki’s reflection when it’s too windy. It’s absolutely stunning !
We spent the night in the Hutt and then walked down on the Sunday (around 5 hours). Unfortunately, there was a hail storm on the Sunday morning so we couldn’t admire the sunrise from the top.
–
.
If you want to do this hike, be sure to check the weather before going as it’s not an easy hike and you need to have a clear weather. We had a sunny weekend (except during the storm but which stopped around 10 am – because the weather can change really quickly at high altitudes) but as it had been raining a lot during the previous days, the tracks were really muddy. So don’t forget to bring good hiking shoes and warm clothes, water and food (don’t forget the diner if you want to spend the night in the hut – as well as a sleeping bag).

Wow Mount Taranaki is spectacular. The hike would have been tough but the reward lies right there…in that inverted cone of a mountain. xx

I’m definitely keen to get there, but living in the South Island it’s not straightforward. I could see it in the distance when I was up Mt Ruapehu in March this year, just didn’t have enough days to go there.

Yes it’s not that close… So I hope you’ll get time to go there one day 🙂
