It’s been 2 months now that I’ve been living in Wellington for my WHV in New Zealand, and I thought it was time to look back on all I’ve discovered here.
So I’ve tried a lot of restaurants (yes, Wellingtonians love their small restaurants, and so do I 😀 ), have eaten a lot of burgers (I arrived during the Wellington On A Plate, which is a huge burger competitions in Wellington) but also met a great bunch of people and discovered some pretty amazing sceneries !
I’m really starting to understand why Wellington (or Welly) has been elected “Coolest Little Capital in the world” ! And I also understand why Wellington is named “Windy Welly” … Don’t think about having good hair day while you’re there 😉
If you’re interested in seeing all the good addresses I’ve tried so far, you can use the great app Mapstr (where you can add all your address to keep them in mind, categorise them and add notes on them if you want), and add me : cindystraveldiaries.

My first impression of the country was ‘Damn, it’s beautiful… And look at the color of the water !’ … Spoiler alert, 2 months later, my impression is still the same 😉

Wellington coastlines
One of the perks of Wellington is that you’re never too far from the sea… And you can have impressive views along the road !
–
Botanic Garden
The Botanic Garden of Wellington is on the top of a hill (there are soooo many hills in Wellington ) so it offers a great view of the city ! To go there, you can walk or take their famous cable car.
–
Mount Victoria Lookout
The Mt Victoria Lookout offers a stunning 360° view of Wellington. To get that view, you have to climb for 30 minutes but it’s totally worth it… What do you think ?
–
It’s also a perfect spot to admire the sunset… and the running clouds carried by the wind !
–
Kaitoke National Park
We went to the Kaitoke National Park to discover the spots where they filmed some scenes of the Lord of the Rings, including Rivendell… But I have to tell you, if you go there, be prepared to see not a lot from the movies (just a door and a tree ! ) but you’ll get a nice forest and blue rivers … In short, it’s a beautiful place anyway, and worth the detour !
–
Red Rocks
Red Rocks is at 30 minutes drive from Wellington’s CBD and is a pretty magical place ! I was speechless in front of the beauty of that black sand contrasting with the blue water. Plus, you can see some seals along the beach… but you have to keep your eyes wide open because if you don’t pay attention they can be confused with the rocks ! 😉
–
Cape Palliser
Cape Palliser is the Southernmost point of the North Island so we decided to drive there (2h30 drive from Wellington) to admire the lighthouse (that has stood on the cliffs since 1897) and climb the 252 steps to admire the view from the top (it was worth it!).
On our way back to Wellington, we also stopped in Puntagirua Pinnacles and even if we had to stop the hike as it was starting to rain a lot, those colorful flowers were beautiful, contrasting with the grey skies. We will go back there for sure ! 🙂
–
Makara Beach
Makara beach is a place near Wellington (30 minutes drive) that offers spectacular views ! You can also see some sheeps along the walk 🙂
Some incredible views, a colorful sunset and some cute sheeps along the way… What else could we ask for ?
–
… I can’t wait to discover more of that amazing country ! 🙂
–

Beautiful 🙂 My husband and I have New Zealand on our list of upcoming destinations. I wanted to see Australia, but he’s convinced the wildlife will kill him, so this is the compromise. 😉

Wellington was one of the cities I felt I missed out on. Time was running out on me with my visa so I only had one night there. I explored it as much as I could and would love to spend more time there to explore more. Glad that you are enjoying it very much there…:)
